Muchacha Tocando el Violín (Girl Playing Violin)

Description

This piece came to be in the hands of the University, together with La Juventud and Muchacha Tocando la Cítara (and a range of other objects and items of furniture), thanks to the donation made by María Julia Castillo López to the Fundación de San Francisco Javier y Santa Cándida, which entrusted the collection to the University in 1984.

Compared to the other two pieces, this sculpture is more solid, less complex and sinuous, somehow more earthly. The figure of the girl is not represented in pure flowing lines in space, but rather takes a ‘Y’ shape. Nevertheless, it retains the delicacy of Art Nouveau and the confusing interplay between love and music.

On the back of the pedestal appear the inscriptions “Friedrich Goldscheider/ Wien/ REPRODUCTION/ RESERVÉ” and “G. Mavre”. This is therefore one of the thousands of pieces in bronze and plaster that the porcelain and Majolica manufacturer Goldscheider reproduced of works by various artists (in this case, G. Mavre).
