Saint Joachim
Description
This sculpture represents Saint Joachim, dressed in a tunic and cape, and carrying a long rod in his right hand. On his head is an ornate halo of precious metals.
The piece originally formed part of the iconography in the altar of the Annunciation, in the right-hand nave of the chapel at the Royal Tobacco Factory. According to the declarations of the Archbishops of Seville and Santiago de Compostela from 1784, those reciting the Lord’s Prayer and a Hail Mary to Saint Joaquim would be granted 160 days’ indulgence.
In the traditional iconography, Saint Joachim is paired with Saint Anne the Teacher. In this work, the chequered base, like that of the statue of Saint Anne, reproduces blue-and-white-tile flooring.
