“Santa María Sedes Sapientiae” University Church

Description

Description

This building is adjacent to Block 8 and close to the Paulo Freire Teaching Block.

Its ground-plan is rectangular and it comprises a single floor with a gabled roof and flat ceramic roof tiles. The inside of the pitched roof is lined with wood and secured by a wooden beam structure based on trusses and cross-bracing. Attached to the lower part of the original building is the barracks watchtower, which remains to this day.

The perimeter structure features steel sections, encased in masonry brick, which support steel trusses, while the external walls are made of one-foot-thick solid brick and cement mortar.

Historical background

This building, constructed in 1951, was once the ammunitions dump of Granada´s Nº 34 “Nuestra Señora del Carmen” infantry barracks. During the 1990s, the barracks were renovated and adapted to the needs of the university, once the site had been fully demilitarised.
