This piece was created in October 2014 for the “UAL-Escuela del Mármol de Andalucía” I International Sculpture Symposium. Some 12 artists from different countries were selected to make their works in situ at the University of Almería. The theme running throughout all the works is “For gender equality and against gender violence”. This piece, entitled “Paz en la Unión”, is by Italian sculptress Elena Saracino. It comprises a cube-shaped grey stone pedestal, supporting a vertical cylindrical body, to which a further piece is attached. Of particular note are its polished finish and its blend of edges and curved forms. Two ochre-coloured plaques complete the work, with the following inscriptions: “Elena Saracino. Italy. Paz en la Unión. October 2014”.  “A union between two distinct yet complementary forms, representing the masculine and feminine elements, which finds balance and wholeness in the generation of the central bud. This symbolizes the soul that identifies the two opposites together. Equality between men and women is like a union that suggests peace and harmony, qualities of the single universal human soul”.
