The Belvedere Torso
Description
The first example from the series of this cast entered the Royal Academy of San Fernando between 1776 and 1780. It formed part of the collection belonging to Anton Raphael Mengs, which he gifted to Charles III and which the king subsequently entrusted to the Royal Academy.
The original of this piece (which can be found at the Vatican Museum in Rome) influenced Michelangelo in his representation of Hercules – note the striking muscular tension that emphasises the terribilità conveyed in the expression of the figures he represents.
